Kelly was one of the original 83 dogs who were being raised for meat at the time the Dangjin dog meat farm was shut down. As a female dog, she was used by the farmer for breeding in order to continue his supply of dogs to the butcher. Her life would have been short, yet brutal. Forced to give birth to multiple litters as soon as she experienced her first heat, Kelly would have eventually been sold to the meat market as dogs are considered “ripe” at the age of 2. Given the fact she was approximately 2 years old at the time of her rescue, she would have met this fate had intervened only weeks later.

Kelly was far along in her pregnancy when the Dangjin dog meat farm was shut down and all the dogs liberated. Understandably, she sensed danger on the farm and was very skittish around humans. She kept her guard up and was always on her toes, knowing she needed to protect herself and her impending babies. Shortly after she was taken from the farm and brought to safety, she gave birth to 7 beautiful puppies. Thankfully, they were healthy and well nurtured by their mother, who we suspect was no stranger to motherhood. She nursed, protected, and cared for them like an old pro.

When her babies grew big enough to be to be weaned and eventually adopted, Kelly regressed. She has completely lost her trust in humans, often resorting to hiding and barking when approached. However, it is difficult to place blame given her brutal ordeal in her short life. 5 years since the farm’s shutdown, Kelly remains extremely apprehensive of humans. It will take an enormous amount of time, patience, and working together to regain her trust, but we are committed to never giving up on Kelly. Help us show this deserving girl there is kindness in the world.
