Alice was rescued from a dog meat farm on Jeju island last spring. She lived in our partner boarding house with over 80 other dogs until she left Korea.
Despite her horrible background, Alice was a “model dog” when she was living in Korea. When she arrived in Canada she was great with her foster during the first few days of decompression, but began to show some nervous and fearful behaviors. So, she was sent to a board and train program where she currently stays, in order to rebuild her confidence. Alice is now nearly back to being the sweet and friendly natured girl we know her to be.
We believe she may have inadvertently been put in situations which made her scared and uncomfortable. Although without malice, this caused her to react. Alice does best with a slow and steady pace, and patience in going at her pace, advocating and rewarding her so she is able to form positive associations to overcome any fear or apprehension.
She currently lives with other dogs, and plays a bit funny with other dogs, and only with a few. (We knew this as she was the same when she stayed at the boarding house in Korea) That being said, she is very respectful of other dogs and their boundaries, and is never aggressive towards them. She gravitates more towards males and less towards females, especially ones who are more high energy or dominant in personality.
Alice has also met many people at her board and train. She can be shy and sensitive at first, but eager to connect and work with you. After that, she tries to win you over every single moment. She is also learning to be patient and laying down to wait for her food instead of running round and round in excitement. She is also learning the concept of fetch.
This sweet girl will happily roll over and ask for belly rubs. However, Alice is currently a bit sensitive when being touched on her sides. This is not a medical issue, but rather (we believe) a bad experience she had somewhere along the way that stuck with her. She is slowly allowing touch with desensitization and counter conditioning approaches, and making great progress. Overall she is very sweet and affectionate towards people, and listens well to instructions.
Alice’s ideal home is with someone who has an experience and understanding of dogs. She would require someone patient and understanding who will take the time to work her her sensitive nature and help her make positive associations when she is scared or apprehensive. Her family should accept that a slow, gentle, and positive approach is what Alice needs and be willing to work with her. Someone who has the time to spend with her during the day and living in a quiet neighborhood is ideal. As her sensitivity towards being touched on her side currently makes it difficult to acclimate her to her harness, a secure, fenced in yard would be a priority.
Alice has been through a lot, but has also come a long way and has shown what a smart and adaptable girl she is with so much potential. She will make a very lucky adopter a wonderful companion.
