Siheung Dog Meat Farm Closure

An Inside Look Into Our Korean Shelters

November 9, 2022 by Sara Liao, Board of Directors & Adoption Manager 1 Comment

Our executive director, EK Park, has returned to Korea to continue where we left off on our recent endeavor. The last time she had her boots on the ground, Free Korean Dogs led the shutdown of a dog meat farm operating in Sihueng, Korea, saving its 101 residents from a terrible fate. She oversaw the negotiation of the shutdown, legal contracts to ensure history would not be repeated, preparation of the shelter for intake, removal and transportation of dogs from the farm, demolition of the farm, and the first stage of medical and behavioral assessments in order to determine a plan of action.

From [Dog Meat] Farm to Fairy Tale Ending

It’s been nearly 4 months since our latest dog meat farm shut down in Siheung, Korea but it certainly feels like much longer. While we have been busy meeting the medical and training needs of some of our rescues, 12 of our dogs from this particular rescue mission have also been busy enjoying their new lives with their forever families in Toronto, Vancouver, and Seattle.

Sihwa (from our recent Sihueng dog meat farm shutdown) was one of the 10 dogs we sent to training school to help her find her courage and confidence. Coming from such an awful background, she found it difficult to trust humans and would often resort to growling and showing her teeth when approached.

What Happens After Rescuing 101 Dog Meat Farm Survivors?

June 21, 2022 by Sara Liao, Board of Directors & Adoption Manager Leave a Comment

Time flies when you’re busy, and boy have our 101 rescues kept us busy! At the end of Disney’s “101 Dalmatians”, dog owners Roger and Anita resolved to buy a large country property to care for the many new additions to their family. We couldn’t have the Disney “fairy tale” ending of buying a large estate with a white picket fence, but our dogs have been kept safe at our partner boarding house where they moved in after they were removed from the farm.

101 Korean Dog Meat Farm Rescues

May 24, 2022 by Sara Liao, Board of Directors & Adoption Manager Leave a Comment

In our largest dog meat operation shutdown to date, we have successfully secured the safety and possession of 101 dogs from a dog meat farm in Siheung, Korea. While this is not our first shut down initiative – having shut down operations from dog meat farms, individual dog sellers, dog meat restaurants, and/or dog tonic shops – we wish we could say it gets easier, but the task always takes us on a rollercoaster of a ride.
