For some dogs, the adoption journey is scary and confusing. They don’t understand where they are going, why they had to leave their “home” (the shelter they have become familiar with), and how they ended up in a new home with new people. Despite how comfortable and welcoming we try to make their surroundings, they need to find their trust and confidence in their own time.
Korean Rescue Dogs
A Life is a Life, and One Worth Saving
Is rescue about saving as many lives as possible, or trying to help those who need it the most? Should it be about quantity or quality? This question is difficult to answer, but in short, it depends on our capacity at any given time.
Look Who Santa Brought Us!
This holiday season, Santa brought 9 new rescues to us, and we couldn’t be happier they are safe and sound.
The Dark Side of Irresponsible Breeding
When puppies become mothers… it may sound like an oxymoron, but it is a reality.

WHY JOIN?
It is estimated over 2 million dogs in South Korea alone are slaughtered for meat each year. Many are brutally tortured prior, as it is believed the adrenaline released from the stress of torture makes the meat tastier and enhances nutritional and healing properties.
By shedding light on their horrible practice through education and awareness, we hope to create a shift from cruelty to compassion both locally and across borders. To date, we have found forever homes for over 1,000 dogs from the dog meat trade and other at-risk circumstances through our rescue, rehabilitation and adoption program.

What It Means To Adopt an Overseas Shelter Pet
I grew up with dogs my whole life. As a kid, we would always bring home puppies (from puppy mills, before we really knew how terrible they were) and so I never had the experience of adopting an adult dog until I was in my early twenties. And then I started adopting adult dogs from overseas when I got connected to a few shelters in Asia (one being Free Korean Dogs in South Korea, the other The Bodhi Shelter in Thailand). And I am here to tell you… it’s a vastly different experience adopting a puppy, to adopting an adult dog in your home country, to adopting an adult dog overseas. But adopting overseas has been such a wonderful experience that I’ve decided that’s how I’ll continue to adopt moving forward.
101 Korean Dog Meat Farm Rescues
In our largest dog meat operation shutdown to date, we have successfully secured the safety and possession of 101 dogs from a dog meat farm in Siheung, Korea. While this is not our first shut down initiative – having shut down operations from dog meat farms, individual dog sellers, dog meat restaurants, and/or dog tonic shops – we wish we could say it gets easier, but the task always takes us on a rollercoaster of a ride.
No Dog Left Behind
Being a rescue organization isn’t just about finding forever homes for homeless dogs. It’s about being an advocate for all dogs and pet companions. We know how important pets are to us, and what a significant role they have in our lives. We at Free Korea Dogs often use the motto “compassion knows no borders”, and we strive to live up to that standard. We understand it is impossible for us to save every single dog, and the dogs who come into our rescue are only a very small percentage of dogs in need. These other dogs are no less worthy of our help, and while we often have to come to terms that we cannot help every dog in ways we would like, we will always do as much as we possibly can.
South Korean President Considers Ban on Dog Meat Consumption
It is no secret South Korea is an epicenter of the Asian dog meat trade. It also distinguishes itself as the only country in the world that commercially farms dogs for food, backed by the National Dog Farmer Association, a registered local group which exists to support its farmers and lobby to keep dog meat legal in Korea.
Thank You for an Amazing Freedom Walk 2021!
Our third annual Freedom Walk (and first in-person Vancouver walk) had us smiling from ear to ear, and we’re still all smiles! It was such a joy to see everyone again after over a year of what felt like endless lockdowns, restrictions, and subsequent isolation from each other. Thank you everyone for yet another successful and memorable event!
