Update: Laon has found a forever home in Vancouver. Yay!

Laon was found as a wandering stray later sent to a high-hill shelter. He was rescued after his name appeared on the euthanasia list. He is currently living with a foster family.

This beautiful boy is your typical lap dog. He is very affectionate with people and likes companionship. This makes him jealous at times when other dogs get attention. He is also playful. In Laon’s world, any activity he gets to do with his humans brings him happiness.

When on leash and/or outdoors, Laon can be reactive. However, we have seen improvements. Initially he would bark and lunge when he saw other dogs. After gaining some confidence, he mostly pulls but does not bark. His adopter should be committed to working on his confidence around other dogs when on leash so he understands they are not a threat to him.

He is also very smart and understands circumstances and routine. When his foster leaves him alone during the weekdays, he does fine alone. However, when being left alone on the weekends, he knows he was left out of “fun” weekend activities and errands, and would begin barking and howling to show his displeasure (but only on weekends!). As a result, his foster brings him out on the weekend so he doesn’t feel left out. We expect Laon will exhibit separation anxiety in his settling in period with his new home as he rebuilds his confidence in a new setting/with new people and learns a new routine. Consistency and routine will be the key to his success.

Laon’s ideal home is one who has experience with dogs – people who will lead with confidence and assertiveness, yet fairness and kindness. He would require a household where there will be someone home with him for the majority of the time (at least in the beginning) as separation anxiety is likely. Adopters should consider the potential of barking and howling as a result of potential separation anxiety if they live in a condo or dwelling with shared walls.
