Geumbok was rescued from a dog meat farm last year. After his rescue, he lived in a private shelter in Hwasung, Korea until he flew to Canada to find his forever home. He is currently living with a foster family in Hamilton, where he also lives with 2 other FKD alumni.
Geumbok has typical lab qualities. He’s a social butterfly who is friendly with everyone and greets them with a wagging tail, whether 2 or 4 legged. He can sometimes get a little excited when greeting people and forgets he is a big boy, and is learning how to say hello politely. He has responded well to “off”, and “no” and takes directions well, so we’re sure he’ll learn this quickly with some time and consistency. After Geumbok has gotten his initial greetings out of the way, he will ask for pets and rubs and give you kisses in return.
His current “safe space” is the backyard and a gated off section in the house (the kitchen and dining room), and he is slowly exploring and expanding his horizons. When the gates are taken down, he still prefers to stay in his space although he will briefly explore other rooms. Geumbok is housetrained, but has occasional marking habits when in new areas and places. However, this is quickly prevented with some supervision. When being caught in the act, he is told “no” and immediately disengages with his intention.
One of Geumbok’s canine’s foster sister is more social, and the other is more assertive, and he has been very polite and respectful of their cues. He is well balanced and has great communication with other dogs. He plays well with them and sometimes will follow their lead as well (such as when his canine foster sister barks at people walking past).
Having never had anything of his own, Geumbok currently feels protective of his food and toys. However, he is slowly learning that he will always be provided for and has no reason to feel insecure about this things being taken away. With some desensitization and counter conditioning, we have seen improvements and believe he will be able to overcome this eventually. He does well with treats and will sit patiently with the other dogs until it is his turn.
Overall, Geumbok is quite open to trying new things and experiences, even when he is apprehensive in the beginning, but will push through. The vacuum however, is currently a nemesis – he barks whenever the vacuum is turned on. Although we are unsure if he is barking out of fear, emulating the loud sound, or alerting everyone to the “danger” of the vacuum, his foster is currently working on desensitizing him.
Being a lab, Geumbok likes to explore things with his mouth. However, he is not destructive in the home and has been left lone for a few hours with no issue. He is eager to please and as a result learns quickly, and has quickly learned “no” when doing something he is not supposed to.
While the vacuum may be evil, Geumbok loves toys, and chew toys especially! Like a typical lab he loves his chew toys. Make sure you have a budget for toys, because Geumbok can get overzealous with them. We are currently looking to find toys that are strong enough for him to chew while being safe and enjoyable for him.
This happy, goofy boy will be great for someone who is looking for a snuggly friendly fur baby. He would enjoy a home in a quiet neighborhood with people who enjoy outdoor time. He would also love a friendly and playful canine sibling, although this is not a requirement for adoption.
