Update: Candy has found a forever home in Toronto. Yay!

Candy was rescued from a high-kill shelter 5 years ago before being euthanized. At the time, she was a very sweet and cuddly girl, so it didn’t take her long to find her forever family in Korea. However, a month after being adopted, her adopter asked to surrender Candy because she was too busy to take care of her. When our boarding house manager went to pick up Candy, she was not in good physical shape – her hair was all tangled and she was crying. In fact, Candy cried all the way to the boarding house.

We’re not entirely sure what had happened, but Candy ended up becoming completely shutdown once she arrived at the boarding house. She shied away from people and would run away when they tried to approach her. With time, she eventually opened up to the staff and volunteers at the boarding house and shared her sweet and gentle demeanor, but unfortunately she remained very shy and timid with strangers. At that point, the boarding house resolved to accept Candy may spend her life as a shelter dog.

However, our executive director (EK Park), who has been visiting our partner boarding house, has noticed slow but positive changes in Candy with every visit. Although still tentative, she allowed EK to pick her up. In her latest visit, Candy was curious and wanted to be close to EK, albeit still at a distance. She would also let EK pet and hold her. Despite her timid and guarded exterior, she saw a lot of love and warmth in Candy and decided we wanted to help find her forever home in Canada. Essentially, we believe she does crave love and attention but is still working to allow herself to let her guard down after losing trust and hope.

Candy is currently with a foster family in Hamilton and has been doing better than we imagined. Although she spent the first few days hiding in her crate and only emerging when everyone was asleep at night, we commend her for her bravery. Now, she is slowly getting comfortable resting in a dog bed with people in the same room. She is food motivated and will approach for treats! This has helped her make positive associations with her new fosters and environment, which has helped earn her trust. She gravitates more towards females than males.

While not yet ready to venture outside, Candy successfully relieves herself on pee pads (although she will sometimes mistake rugs for pee pads. This is easily solved by removing any rugs until she has learned the difference).

Currently, she lives with another dog and a cat. Candy finds her confidence when her canine foster sibling (also a FKD alum) is in the same room with her. She does not engage or chase the resident cat, and does not show any signs of resource guarding.

This girl is as sweet as her name. She is quiet and gentle with a lot of love to give, but needs some time to build her trust and confidence. She would require an adopter who has the time, patience, and willingness to put in the effort in building a bond and establishing trust with her, at her pace. For this reason, her adopter should have the time to spend with her at home. Candy would do well with another calm, submissive dog in the home who she can mirror and gain confidence from.

Candy is truly a sweetheart who brightens a room when she wags her little tail. We see so much potential in her – a girl who is full of love and affection, but working to let her guard down after being hurt and rejected. It will take time, but your bond with Candy will be so special because of it.

DHPPL, Canine Influenza, Kennel Cough, Rabies, Corona, Heartworm test, Giardia test, Flea & tick & heartworm prevention are all done.
